"The Cosmos is all that is or ever was or ever will be. Our feeblest contemplations of the Cosmos stir us — there is a tingling in the spine, a catch in the voice, a faint sensation of a distant memory, as if we were falling from a great height. We know we are approaching the greatest of mysteries."
~ Carl Sagan: Cosmos
"For small creatures such as we the vastness is bearable only through love."
"There is grandeur in this view of life, with its several powers, having been originally breathed into a few forms or into one; and that, whilst this planet has gone cycling on according to the fixed law of gravity, from so simple a beginning endless forms most beautiful and most wonderful have been, and are being, evolved."
~Charles Darwin: On the Origin of Species
A Personal Treatise
The future for us is a small place, our moments but drops in a vast pool of time. And yet with these fragile baubles of time we can send forth great ripples into the distant future. It is within our power to do so and our choice what tangible memory we make ours. In this way we alone may reach into the eternity of the cosmos.
Yet,it takes courage to see the world with open eyes, not through colored lenses but accepting of it's ugly truths on equal plane with it's sublime. To see beyond one's own fragile existence, beyond our personal fears, desires, and immediate ambitions is a gift we have each been given as a legacy of our evolution. But to use this gift is something that must be learned through logic, critical thinking and an endless scrutinous introspection.
And to those that fear to dream of a brighter world as the obstacles seem insurmountable, or they will be judged for their fellow peers for a sin of egotism, do not fret so much of such things. It takes courage to dream with open eyes, beyond the barren self indulgences of sleeping men; To become one must first believe they can become and such is the way of dreams. To learn to dream is something within all of us and it is a great shame when this capacity is squandered. How many more great dreams would have contributed to our legacy had those lost possibilities been realized?
I wish, for my part, to dream of a brighter tomorrow. Let it be judged that it is my ego speaking that I wish to leave behind me a promise of a brighter world. Let it be ridiculed, as it ever has been, let my person be judged. I do not pretend to know I will succeed by any measure, but I know I must dare to hope, dare to dream and at last dare to try. May you all, in your own way, wish to do the same. But what is the memory of our existence if not a thought that lingers perhaps for a few generations time, until at last all those links with those we knew die off and with them at last our last vestiges. But to leave something behind greater than those personal memories, that is dreams..and ideas, will linger far longer in the vastness of the future and inspire new ripples.
